Team Owners Who Will Join Our 2026 Winner’s Circle
Our Monroe County Schools girls flag football program began in 2009 with the support of then–School Superintendent Randy Acevedo. Today, in 2026, the program continues to grow stronger with the continued support of Monroe County Schools and current Superintendent Theresa Axford.
Since its early beginnings in 1999, the girls’ division has grown exponentially, and the IWFFA was no longer able to financially support all the girls’ teams. This led to the creation of the “Team Owner” program, which opened the doors for every girl in the Florida Keys to play flag football for free. Through this initiative, all Monroe County schools were given the opportunity to enter a girls’ team to represent their school in the Kelly McGillis Classic, at no cost to the school or the players’ parents.
This has been a wonderful opportunity to support the schools, the families, and to help develop outstanding young female athletes. This year, schools from Key West to Key Largo will once again compete in the tournament.
Each fall season, the IWFFA contacts local schools to ask if they would like to participate in the girls’ flag football program. We visit the schools, introduce the sport to the girls, and help form each school’s team. We continue coaching the girls and juniors to prepare them for the Kelly McGillis Classic, promoting high-quality flag football and teaching our young athletes the game, strategy, and mechanics.
For us, winning is not the focus; instead, we emphasize camaraderie, understanding the game, overcoming challenges on the field, building leadership, and having fun. It is a truly meaningful and rewarding program.

To sustain the school flag football program, we sought out “Team Owners” who would financially support and become directly involved with their teams. We are deeply grateful to each group and business —many of them local, family-run establishments— who care about the girls and want to see them grow, succeed, and proudly represent their schools.
In 2026, each business will be officially welcomed into our Winner’s Circle during the girls’ awards ceremony. Their nameplates will be displayed in our Monroe County Schools as a permanent recognition of their invaluable support.

On September 19, 1992 Suanne the artist and Richard the writer cooked and served black beans, rice, and fish to their first lunch customers on the painted picnic tables under the tropical almond tree of their fine out- door dining area. Before then, through the years, the property has hosted cock fighting, gambling and Friday night boxing matches refereed by Ernest Hemingway. A dance hall, a bordello and a playhouse have occupied the second floor. Today inside the Bordello Gallery above the restaurant, one can still peek through the sliding peep holes into the tiny rooms.
The restaurant has grown, just as the history and stories of the property itself, and has turned into one of the most fun, delicious and popular places to dine. Blue Heaven contributes and supports the community heavily over the years.And their owners are active citizens to better conditions for all.

Key West Sunrise Rotary Club in the Conch Republic was started in 1988. Local Rotarians felt that it was important that Key West have a Rotary Club that welcomed women members, so a group of individuals got together and chartered a new club. The first President was Roy Anderson, who later was elected District Governor for Rotary District 6990. Charter members were: Steve Hen- son, Kim Works, Rich Welter, Percy Curry, Sparky Carbonell, and Mike Horne. Thank you to this amazing group for recognizing that “Service Above Self” includes everyone both men and women!

VFW – VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS

Southernmost VFW Post 3911, “we exist to help all Veterans in Monroe County.
No one does more for veterans”.
This is the third year the VFW has sponsored the girls flag football program and the Kelly McGillis Classic.
The VFW also sponsors our car wash fundraisers. The purpose of the VFW is to speed rehabilita- tion of the nation’s disabled and needy veterans, assist veterans’ widows and orphans and the dependents of needy or disabled veterans, and promote Americanism by means of education in patriotism and by constructive service to local communities.
The organization maintains both its legislative service and central office of its national rehabilitation service in Washington, D.C.
The latter nationwide program serves disabled veterans of all wars, members and nonmembers alike, in matters of government compensation and pension claims, hospitalization, civil-service employment preference, etc.

Dr. Seanica Howe Received her doctorate of dental surgery degree from the University of Missouri in Kansas City in 2000.
She graduated with honors and was recognized for her academic excellence via membership in the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon national dental honor society.
