Team Owners who will join our 2022 Winner’s Circle

Our Monroe County schools girls flag football program was initiated in 2009 and supported by then Monroe County school Superintendent: Randy Acevedo. Today the program continues to receive support from Monroe County Schools and current School Superintendent: Theresa Axford. The girl’s division has since grown exponentially since its beginning in 1999 and the IWFFA was not able to afford all its girls’ teams. The “Team Owner” program opened the doors for all girls in the Florida Keys to play flag football for free by offering the opportunity to all schools in Monroe county to enter a team of girls to represent their school in the Kelly McGillis Classic tournament at no cost to the school or the players parents. What a wonderful opportunity to support the schools, parents and help to develop such fine female athletes. Schools from Key West to as far as Key Largo who will be competing in this year’s tournament.

Each fall season, the IWFFA contacts local schools asking if they would like to participate in the girl’s flag football program. We then travel to the schools, offer flag football to the girls, and start up the school girls flag football team. We continue to coach the girls and juniors to get ready for the Kelly McGillis Classic Tournament and promote good quality flag football, teaching our young athletes to understand the game, strategy and mechanics. For us winning is not emphasized, but rather camaraderie, understanding the game, overcoming the challenging skills on the field, building leaders  and having fun. It’s a great program.

To afford the school-flag football program, we sought “Team Owners” who would help to financially fund and become directly involved with their team. We are grateful to each group and business who are local “mom and pop” businesses who cared for the girls and wanted to see them succeed and represent their schools. Each business will soon join our “Winners Circle” officially at the girls’ awards ceremony. Their name plates are displayed in our Monroe County Schools on our “Winners Circle” plaque.

Key West Sunrise Rotary in the Conch Republic

Key West Sunrise Rotary Club in the Conch Republic was started in 1988. Local Rotarians felt that it was important that Key West have a Rotary Club that welcomed women members, so a group of individuals got together and chartered a new club. The first President was Roy Anderson, who later was elected District Governor for Rotary District 6990. Charter members were: Steve Hen- son, Kim Works, Rich Welter, Percy Curry, Sparky Carbonell, and Mike Horne. Thank you to this amazing group for recognizing that “Service Above Self” includes everyone both men and women!
