TOURNAMENT SUMMARY
This was a Friendship Game between two brand new teams
The International Women Flag Football Association travels around the world to many countries since 1997.
We have players originally from one country, relocate to another country. In Toronto, Canada, we have our Afghanistan flag football players, in Winnepeg, Canada we have our Hondurans. The IWFFA was asked to help start up flag football in their new countries in 2024, and in that 2024 promotional tour, the IWFFA helped these women create their new teams respectively: Toronto Storm and Winnepeg Prairie Storm teams.
Winnepeg, Prairie Storm had been training during the winter in doors, and Toronto Storm team waited until spring 2025 to get back on the flag football field after their cold winter break. From June 29 – July 4, the Toronto Storm trained each morning from 8 – 10AM. The team comprised not only of Afghans but Sudan, India, Barbados, the Islands, etc, from other countries. This was a special team of international women who came to Canada seeking a new life…. asylum in most cases.
The Toronto Storm team traveled to the Friendship Games as a team. The camaraderie, bond and fun was amazing. It was a wonderful life experience for the women.
Winnepeg Storm team organized events before and after the Friendship Games, making it much more than flag football games.
Their team car pooled and picked up the Toronto women at the airport and we very welcoming. We knew the skill level was just developing for these two teams and it was planned to give the experience of a flag football game for both teams. On July 6, the 3 Friendship games that were played, could have gone either way, the competition was good, and it was Winnepeg Prairie Storm who won all 3 games.
We are developing 8 vs 8 flag football in Canada, with the spirit of the game as a crucial component. We are women who support other women and that includes teams we compete against. It does not matter who wins or looses, it matters that we play clean, challenge our bodies on the field, play our best and in the end are friends with our competition and broaden our flag football family. We feel this is what sports should be for.
We thank all the women on the two teams: Toronto Storm, Winnepeg Prairie Storm
