GIRL'S FLAG FOOTBALL

Never too young for Flag Football!
How the girls division became a part of the IWFFA

In August of '97, the IWFFA was in the beginning of producing it's second annual tournament in San Francisco. Our office received a phone call from Mr. Rodd Johnson of the Boys & Girls Club of Jacksonville asking what he could do with his girls who currently were playing flag football, but had no place to go. We decided to offer a girls division for the first time in any sanctioned IWFFA tournament at that event and the result has been explosive. For all our IWFFA tournaments, we now offer girls divisions ages 9 - 13 yr. and 14 - 17 yr. of age.

Hundreds of phone calls

In August of '98 JUMP Magazine featured a story of girls football and highlighted the IWFFA. Our office received over 300 phone calls from girls who wanted to play flag football. Mr. Johnson's phone call was just one of hundreds we have received pertaining to girls flag football ever since August of '97

How do we address all of these phone calls?

The main purpose for our 1999 United States Promotional Tour was to address these phone calls and bring special attention to the girls. The IWFFA has worked with such organizations as: SportsBridge in San Francisco, Oakland Parks and Rec., Jacksonville Boys & Girls Club, Key West, FL. Public Schools, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Dallas, YWCA of Dallas, Parks & Rec. City of Dallas and the list goes on.
What can you do if you want to start a girls flag football program in your area?

Individual girls have helped to organize clinics in their area by simply making a phone call, or sending an email to our office. We travel to cities where girls flag football does not exist and help to create teams or league by offering flag football clinics. Just contact our office.

The girls division is the seed for the women's division, allowing girls to develop flag football skills at an early age will increase the level of competition in all levels of flag football for females. They are a very, very important entity of the IWFFA. All results of our tournaments and leagues are kept on file and will be used for our future museum for Girls and Women's Flag Football.
